James E. French is a seasoned arts and culture professional with more than three decades of experience in South Africa’s music and creative industries. Since 2022, he has served as Head of Operations at IKS Cultural Consulting, where he plays a multifaceted role overseeing project management, administration, and strategic support across a diverse portfolio of arts initiatives.
Widely respected within the sector, James is regularly approached to be a speaker and facilitator at public conferences and industry events. He is known for leading insightful discussions and offering thoughtful guidance and encouragement to practitioners navigating the complexities of the arts and cultural landscape.
James holds a Bachelor of Music (Honours) and a Master’s degree in Arts and Culture Management from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits), where his research focused on organisational sustainability within the non-profit arts sector.
From 2016 to 2022, he served as Manager of Corporate Social Investment at the SAMRO Foundation (Southern African Music Rights Organization). In this role, he collaborated with multidisciplinary teams to design and implement impactful programmes, manage events, conduct research into priority areas, and ensure the transparent and effective distribution of funding across numerous successful projects.
Prior to this, James spent 14 years as Deputy Director and Administrator of the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, an award-winning visual arts non-profit organisation based in Newtown, Johannesburg. During his tenure, he contributed to the organisation’s growth and sustainability, while also maintaining his own creative practice. His musical compositions were featured alongside visual art exhibitions, including at international platforms such as the Gwangju Biennale, as well as in various South African competitions.
Earlier in his career, James worked as a freelance musician throughout the 1990s, composing music for film and advertising, and performing extensively across jazz, classical, and gospel genres.
Through his leadership, scholarship, and creative work, James E. French continues to make a meaningful contribution to the development and sustainability of the arts sector in South Africa.
