Do South Africans who create or present music content
benefit from streaming?

In 2020, Concerts SA researched live music streaming in South Africa and published the report “Digital Futures?”. This was a small-sample snapshot survey, conducted at the start of the disastrous Covid period.

Now, we’re revisiting this research, to find out how the landscape has changed and about the experience of platforms and individual musicians currently streaming music from South Africa. We need this information to help inform policy-making, support music-makers, and lobby for change where it’s needed

We’re sending out this survey, and hope – if this is you – you’ll assist us by completing and returning it. It’ll help us to map, accurately

  1. What earnings are musicians and other players making from streaming and producing online content?
  2. What interventions the music industry and government can do to assist artists in streaming their music?
  3. What music genres are being streamed in South Africa?
  4. How can we improve on the Digital Futures, research on streaming models published in July 2020?

We look forward to receiving your completed survey by 17:00 (GMT+2), Wednesday 23 February 2022.

RESEARCH CONSENT FORM

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

This survey/interview forms part of broader research about live streaming concert models in South Africa for a study commissioned by IKS Consulting. It is anticipated that the aggregated results and not individual data will be published in a report that will be made available online. It follows up on the ConcertsSA 2020 Digital Futures research, and we hope to track how the South African live streaming landscape and its revenue possibilities have changed for performers and platforms over the past year. The research team includes Gwen Ansell, Monica Newton, Andre le Roux, Atiyyah Khan and Jess White

OTHER POTENTIAL USES:
We may also re-use some of the same information to inform media coverage or to prepare other, related papers, articles and briefing notes.

HOW ARE WE GOING TO RESEARCH?
The research takes the form of an email questionnaire, which we may follow up in some cases with a case study interview. Completing the questionnaire should not take up more than 15 minutes of your time; we’ll consult you separately if we’d like to conduct an interview too (by phone, Zoom or face-to-face).

WHAT ARE YOUR RIGHTS?
Your participation is voluntary, and you can withdraw at any time without penalty. If you wish any of the information you provide to be used anonymously, or for background only, rather than being quoted in full and attributed to you, please tell us and we will respect your wishes. In accordance with POPIA requirements, we will keep your information secure, use it only for the purposes outlined above, not pass your personal details on to others, and not hold the information for any longer than is required.
