On Thursday, 19 September 2024, we lost a towering figure in both South African music and film: Timmy Kwebulana.
While many know him for his remarkable work on screen, Timmy was also an exceptional drummer, deeply rooted in Cape Town’s jazz scene. As a key member of the Uptown Quartet, Timmy performed alongside two other jazz legends, Victor Ntoni and Danayi Dlova, shaping the sound of a generation.
Victor Ntoni, a composer and bassist, was known for his groundbreaking contributions to South African jazz, composing iconic works such as Mphambani and collaborating with artists like Miriam Makeba. Together with Timmy, they created a unique blend of African rhythms and contemporary jazz, pushing the boundaries of what the genre could be.
Danayi Dlova, a versatile jazz vocalist, brought a distinct voice and energy to the Uptown Quartet, perfectly complementing Timmy’s powerful drumming. Their performances were more than just music—they were a testament to the vibrant spirit of Cape Town’s jazz tradition.
While the drum has now fallen silent, Timmy’s contribution to jazz and his collaborations with legends like Ntoni and Dlova have left a lasting legacy. His rhythm will continue to inspire future generations of musicians, and his spirit will forever be a part of South Africa’s rich cultural heritage.
Rest in peace, Timmy Kwebulana. Your rhythm will echo forever.
